Textile Arts Tent: New in 2010! Fiber arts from the Celtic traditions will be on display. Celebrating their 30th anniversary, members of Chelsea's Spinners' Flock are eager todemonstrate the techniques of waulking of tweeds, weaving, hand spinning and lace making. They'll share their knowledge of these
centuries-old arts throughout the day, with live waulking music by Renee Ginell.
Waulking the tweed is a traditional Scottish technique for shrinking and wet-finishing hand-woven woolen cloth. Several yards of hand-woven cloth are immersed in hot soapy water, squeezed and passed around a circle of “waulkers” around a table, where each member thumps the wet material on the table. The cloth makes a number of transits around the table until the weave has been suitably shrunken and “fulled,” resulting in a heavier, denser fabric than when it started. Gaelic waulking songs to maintain the rhythm traditionally accompany the process.
